SUMMARY:ERN @ PEARC'24
DESCRIPTION:PEARC’24 is being held July 21-25\, 2024\, in Providence\, RI\, and ERN will be participating in the activities listed below discussing ERN and our recent projects. We look forward to seeing you there. \n\n\n\nTuesday\, July 23 \n\n\n\nCommunity of Communities \n\n\n\nCo-Location Event \n\n\n\n12:30 PM – 2:00 PM    Ballroom C \n\n\n\nPanelists:  Dana Brunson – Internet2\, Tom Cheatham – CARCC\, Sandra Gesing – US-RSE\, Forough Ghahramani – Campus Champions\, John Goodhue – MGHPCC\, Julie Ma – Open OnDemand\, Henry Neeman – Virtual Residency Program\, Andy Sherman – CAREERS\, Barr von Oehsen – ERN \n\n\n\nThe Community of Communities (CoCo) working group envisions connecting communities of RCD++ (Research Computing and Data\, broadly defined) professionals. The working group advocates for the role of RCD professionals in a way that such professionals can find organizations that align with their interests and goals\, exchange experiences to further their knowledge\, expertise\, and skill sets\, and enable them to feel part of a community that values and incentivizes their work. A key goal of the group is to develop a comprehensive mapping of the RCD ecosystem and guide people to suitable activities and projects/initiatives in the ecosystem such as CaRCC\, Campus Champions\, US-RSE (to name a few\, but by no means an exhaustive list). These connections may be of particular interest to those just starting out in RCD or those looking to build collaborative relationships. The CoCo working group grew out of the Community of Communities Working Group associated with the NSF CI Workforce Development Workshop in 2020. This CoCo recruiting event invites everyone interested and part of the RCD ecosystem to participate\, connect\, and share experiences\, defining collaboration possibilities and developing a vision for the future of the RCD ecosystem. \n\n\n\nWednesday July 24 \n\n\n\nThe Evolving ERN Cryo-EM Federated Instrument Pilot Project \n\n\n\nSystems & Software Track Session 611:50 AM – 12:00 PM Room 553 A&B \n\n\n\nAuthors: Maureen Dougherty\, Barr von Oehsen\, Jason Kaelber\, Jeremy Schafer\, Bala Desinghu\, Morgan Ludwig and John Goodhue \n\n\n\nThe Ecosystem for Research Networking (ERN) CryoEM Remote Instrument Access Pilot Project addresses the challenges and barriers facing the transition of instrument-driven science self-contained islands to federated wide-area internet accessible instruments. This project’s goal is to facilitate cross-institutional infrastructure sharing at the interface of computing and electron microscopy through a web portal leveraging federated access to one or more instruments\, workflows/pipelines utilizing edge computing in conjunction with advanced computing\, along with real-time monitoring for experimental parameter adjustments and decision making. The intent is to foster team science and scientific innovation\, with emphasis on under-represented and under-resourced institutions\, through the democratization of scientific instruments. This paper presents a short summary of some of the challenges encountered with the latest development efforts of this active project\, creating a FABRIC Cloudlet and incorporating Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center’s Bridges-2 as an advanced computing option. \n\n\n\nEnhancing Research Infrastructure and Workforce Diversity in Higher Education through Strategic Collaboration and Investment – PEARC24 \n\n\n\nWorkforce Development\, Training\, Diversity and Education Track Session 312:10 PM – 12:25 PM      Junior Ballroom \n\n\n\nAuthors: Forough Ghahramani\, Sunita Kramer\, Barr von Oehsen\, Maureen Dougherty and John Hicks   \n\n\n\nMany smaller and under-resourced institutions\, including MSIs\, HSIs\, HBCUs\, and EPSCoR institutions\, are engaged in significant science research and education and recognize the value of enhanced access to advanced computing resources. Collaborations\, shared resources\, and expertise from local\, regional\, and national levels can substantially support their internal efforts. The Ecosystem for Research Networking (ERN) Broadening the Reach (BTR) working group is actively learning from these institutions on how to better support their needs. The group’s findings and recommendations\, derived from community engagement\, will be shared\, as part of the NSF-sponsored CC*CRIA grant OAC-2018927.

SUMMARY:Deep Learning with Python (Webinar)
DESCRIPTION:Hands-on Training – Deep Learning with Python and Jupyter \n\n\n\n\nEVENT RECORDING\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDeep Learning (DL) outperforms Machine Learning (ML) in many of the applications related to Computer Vision (CV) and Natural Language Processing (NLP). One of the biggest advantages of DL over ML is that they can automatically extract the important features from the data. With sufficient data and compute power\, DL methods\, in particular the supervised learning methods\, can achieve the prediction accuracies that were not seen before with any other statistical methods in applications related to CV and NLP. \n\n\n\nIn this workshop\, we will go through the basics of artificial neural networks (ANN)\, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN)\, and Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN)\, and do hands-on training with these DL models to build predictive analytics for image and text data. \n\n\n\nObjective of the workshop \n\n\n\nUnderstand the basics of Artificial Neural Networks (ANN)Prepare image and text data suitable for the neural networksLearn how to apply various DL models such as ANN\, CNN\, and RNNImprove the accuracy of the model with Hyperparameter Optimization\n\n\n\nWhat is needed? SUMMARY:Machine Learning with Python (Webinar)
DESCRIPTION:Hands-on Training – Machine Learning with Python and Jupyter \n\n\n\n\nEVENT RECORDING\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nIn the last few years\, both industry and academia witnessed the rise of Machine Learning (ML) methods being applied in finance\, marketing\, retails\, science\, engineering\, healthcare\, and humanities. Learning how to apply ML methods to a domain-specific application does not require detailed knowledge about the inner machinery of these methods; however\, one needs to learn the best practices and recommendations followed by the community. \n\n\n\nIn this workshop\, after a brief overview of machine learning\, we will focus on doing the hands-on training in applying ML models on various data types including image\, text\, and time series. We will work through the use cases of classification and regression problems and discuss where to apply supervised or unsupervised methods. \n\n\n\nObjective of the workshop \n\n\n\nUnderstand supervised and unsupervised methodsChoose correct metrics and sampling methods for classification vs regression problemsFind out which features are important in a given datasetLearn to apply ML models such as Decision Trees\, Random Forest\, and Support Vector MachinesPerform clustering and dimensionality reductions (PCA\, t-SNE\, K-means\, etc.)Search the parameter space – hyperparameter optimization\n\n\n\nWhat is needed? SUMMARY:ERN Virtual All Hands - Materials Discovery Session
DESCRIPTION:Materials Discovery is one of the research areas where gaining a deeper understanding of the workflows\,  research computing and data requirements\, collaborations\, and challenges will enable the ERN to have the broadest impact across multiple research disciplines\, pedagogical approaches\, senior level college and university administrators\, and other organizations within the region and beyond. Researchers in materials discovery are realizing their traditional data-intensive HPC workflows are reaching the limits of original progress. For this reason\, they are looking to new paradigms that include convergence of HPC and Machine Learning (ML) methodologies\, algorithm development\, and novel ways to access the data distributed across multiple institutions used in training systems as promising approaches to overcome the major computational performance limitations they are faced with.  Exploratory conversations with Penn State\, Rutgers\, SUNY Buffalo\, MIT\, and others suggest that Materials Discovery offers an attractive testbed for advanced cyberinfrastructure of the sort the ERN can offer through future funding opportunities such as the Mid-Scale RI-1 program. As with Cryo-EM/Cryo-ET\, this session will explore possibilities for extending collaborations to include other institutions as well as the community of Research Computing and Networking organizations. \n\n\n\nPlease view the agenda here.

SUMMARY:ERN Virtual All Hands - Structural Biology Session
DESCRIPTION:Cryo-EM/ET is one of the research areas where gaining a deeper understanding of the workflows\,  research computing and data requirements\, collaborations\, and challenges will enable the ERN to have the broadest impact across multiple research disciplines\, pedagogical approaches\, senior level college and university administrators\, and other organizations within the region and beyond. We estimate that the Cryo-EM/Cryo-ET community in the Northeast comprises nearly 50 centers serving more than 800 laboratories from Pennsylvania to Maine.  Single Particle Reconstruction information produced by these centers is producing transformative insights.  Given the cost and value of the instruments involved\, fast turnaround and efficient use of resources is key.  While all centers are well equipped to deliver images from prepared samples\, processing and storage of these images can present significant and unnecessary obstacles\, especially for labs that do not have easy access to computing resources and expertise. The Cryo-EM/Cryo-ET microscopy labs in the Northeast have formed a relatively tight knit community\, allowing for free flow of information and experience\, and reducing duplication of effort\, and accelerating the adoption of new techniques. This session will explore possibilities for extending this collaboration to include the community of Research Computing and Networking organizations that serve these labs and the broader impacts. \n\n\n\nPlease view the agenda here.

SUMMARY:ERN Virtual All Hands - Architecture/Federation Session
DESCRIPTION:Merging what we learned from the ERN working group meetings\, workshops\, and the community\, our goal for the ERN has evolved into building an instrument that interconnects the research instruments on our campuses through a federated private cloud platform (OpenCI Labs)\, a secure but open gateway to our campus CI ecosystems\, coupled with distributed specialized cloudlet nodes that provide near data computing and advanced networking capabilities placed within close proximity to a research instrument (edge cloud services). This ERN effort\, driven by the needs of the Structural Biology\, Materials Discovery\, and Computer Science and Broadening the Reach communities\, with the help from people representing all the major stakeholder groups and partner sites across the region and beyond\, is focused on standing up these secure services in order to revolutionize the way the research and education communities across the nation collaborate\, access research instruments\, and share data\, ultimately leading to new and exciting research and education endeavors. The purpose of this session is to share what we have learned since the last AHM\, instrument designs\, and future projects with the hope that\, as a community\, we find a path forward to realize the ERN vision and mission. \n\n\n\nPlease access the agenda here.

SUMMARY:ERN Structural Biology Voice of the Customer Virtual Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Rutgers Institute for Quantitative Biomedicine and the Eastern Regional Network are co-organizing an online workshop to solicit feedback from electron microscopists and electron microscopy facility managers regarding their information technology (IT) challenges. The goal of our Voice of the Customer exercise is to ascertain the needs of this rapidly growing community of structural biologists for enumeration in an NSF Mid-scale Research Infrastructure-1 application (Program Solicitation NSF 21- 505\, Mid-scale RI-1). \n\n\n\nOur proposal seeks funds to establish robust federated IT data transfer networking and data management solutions among ERN-member institutions that will enable facile and secure online access to electron microscopy facilities and the large volumes of data generated therefrom. \n\n\n\nElectron microscopists and electron microscopy facility managers working in ERN-member institutions are strongly encouraged to register (at no cost) and contribute to the success of the Mid-scale RI-1 proposal by explaining current IT infrastructure pain points and helping to identify future enhancements for remote access and control of imaging experiments by structural biologists using institutional\, regional\, and national electron microscopy facilities. Interested parties from outside the ERN\, including ex-US institutions\, are similarly encouraged to register (at no cost) and participate. The ERN is committed to identifying IT infrastructure solutions that can be disseminated across the nation and around the world. \n\n\n\nTo participate in the ERN Structural Biology Voice of the Customer workshop\, please register here. SUMMARY:ERN Broadening the Reach Virtual Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Many smaller\, mid-sized and under-resourced campuses\, including MSIs\, HSIs\, HBCUs\, and EPSCoR institutions\, have compelling science research and education activities along with an awareness of the benefits associated with better access to cyberinfrastructure resources. Yet\, these schools typically may not have the resources or expertise in-house to go through the process of identifying\, understanding and quantifying science drivers\, understanding the cyberinfrastructure needed to support the applications; and\, then provide both the technical and application support associated with matching the applications to the infrastructure\, particularly when the required resources are outside of their campus environment. \n\n\n\nWe invite you and colleagues at your institution to participate in the Eastern Regional Network’s (ERN) Broadening the Reach (BTR) Workshop December 10-11 (https://forms.gle/KY1out4urW5Hqykt6). The workshop is bringing together representatives (including CIOs and/or provosts\, vice presidents for research\, researchers\, educators\, and technical support staff) from the small\, mid-sized and under-resourced schools in the Northeast\, including MSIs\, HSIs\, HBCUs\, and EPSCoR institutions\,  along with regional (and national) cyberinfrastructure experts with the goal of improving the Eastern Regional Network’s understanding of how best to support under-resourced academic institutions in the region. To participate in the workshop\, please register here for the ERN Broadening the Reach workshop (https://forms.gle/KY1out4urW5Hqykt6) . \n\n\n\nWe also invite you and your colleagues to participate in the pre-workshop survey (https://delaware.ca1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_8wFAFke835Pi0Op)\, developed by the ERN BTR working group\, designed to help identify perceived challenges and opportunities at participating institutions\, and to use the knowledge from the survey to serve as a baseline framework for workshop discussion sessions. Only members of the ERN Broadening the Reach working group will have access to the information provided in response to survey questions\, and individual responses will be kept private and secure. Participants will have the opportunity to remain anonymous.  Please note\, please plan to take a few moments to complete the survey prior to the workshop and preferably by November 15\, even if you are not able to participate in the workshop\, your input is important to us. \n\n\n\nWe are seeking participation in the workshop and survey from each of the following areas: CIOs\, VPRs\, provosts\, researchers\, faculty\, and research computing and Central IT technical support staff. Please feel free to forward to appropriate members of your organization.  \n\n\n\nFor additional information about the workshop or survey\, please contact Forough.ghahramani@njedge.net or jhicks@internet2.edu.
